Wellbeing in St. Mary's

The Indicators of Wellbeing

Wellbeing is provided for at Junior Cycle within four hundred hours over first, second and third year, through SPHE, CSPE, PE and our Wellbeing programme in St. Mary’s.

The indicators of Wellbeing; Aware, Active, Responsible, Resilient, Respected and Connected are interwoven in all Junior Cycle subjects, but have particular relevance in these areas. Our Wellbeing programme includes the following.

First Year

First year students will have one class a week of Wellbeing and one class of Music Wellness, in addition to their SPHE, CSPE & PE lessons.
  1. Wellbeing
Begins with general induction to support our first years at the start of their journey as a St. Mary’s student. Our wellbeing teaching team make use of creative and active methodologies to ease the students’ transition from Primary school to secondary school.

These cover the following topics: class bonding, orientation of the school, organisation of their belongings and timetables (over the first month). This is followed by the ISPCC Smart Moves Programme, which has twenty-six lessons that focus on building resilience. It helps the students identify their safe spaces, adults and friends they can rely on, techniques to help them deal with stress and friendship issues, further organisation of self, effective communication, online safety check-in and understanding their interests and hobbies and how each can support their personal wellbeing.

  2. Music Wellness
Provides opportunity for fun student connection through a variety of music related activities from rhythm & harmony, sound creation, singing and music appreciation.

Second Year

In the second year, our students will have one class a week of Active Wellness in addition to SPHE, CSPE & PE.

  1. Active Wellness
Covers a variety of activities that provide opportunities for the students to connect with each other and increase their physical activity.
